Crime Index

KC Crime Intelligence Index

internal · nothing here publishes by existing here

The encyclopedia of Kansas City crime and the institutions around it — organizations as documented in court, the prosecutions that name them, KCPD and its oversight, the datasets, and the folklore recorded as folklore. Every claim carries its source and a reliability tier. Person records are barred from publication outright; anything naming a living local subject is insurance-gated. Charter and bright lines: editorial/kc-crime-index/CHARTER.md. Authorizing record: 2026-08-05_KC-Crime-Intelligence-Index-Authorized.md.

⚠ Past review interval

the correction obligation

Dispositions move. These records have not been re-checked inside their interval, so they are not current and must not be treated as such. People 90 days, cases 180, organizations 365.

How well sourced is this, really

claims by tier

A claim can never outrank its weakest source — the merger enforces it. The share at academic tier or better is the honest measure of whether this corpus is documentation or hearsay.

The entries

The source ledger

Every source, once, with an id that claims cite. A source that goes dark stays here marked dead-link rather than being deleted — the claim it backed does not silently become unsourced.

Not in the corpus

what this deliberately does not hold

No territory map. There is no polygon field in the schema and the merger hard-rejects one. Geography enters only as a filing's own words, quoted and dated.
No gang signal in the crime data. Verified 2026-08-05: the KCPD dataset has no gang field, and its description column matches %GANG% zero times across the year. Gang geography cannot be inferred from incident density, and an attempt would in practice map violence against the race column.
No victims. Named crime victims are a permanent hold in HELD-REGISTER.md. Incidents are described without building victim entries.
No enforcement product. This is a newsroom reference, collected for this newsroom.
